Night Life at Ponte Milvio

Ponte Milvio is known for being an excellent place to dine in Rome. The area around the old bridge is a ”food district” that can satisfy every preference and occasion, casual or formal, from happy hour until after-dinner drinks, or even take-out.

To really enjoy the local cuisine, we recommend you start at lunch. The oldest and most popular spot for lunch, especially in the summer, is the chioschetto di Ponte Milvio, a casual kiosk with indoor and outdoor seating right behind the Ponte Milvio arch, or else l’altro chiosco another kiosk, run by Rosy and Bruno, which is in Piazzale Ponte Milvio, at the beginning of Viale di Tor di Quinto.

Right nearby, for the perfect appetizers and finger-foods is the Caffé Ponte Milvio and also Ristocampo, both with plentiful outdoor seating, famous for their cocktails accompanied by hors d’oeuvres, which are bustling with people starting around 8 p.m. For more light fare head down Via Flaminio to Peccati di Gola for their many wines accompanied by a wide selection of cheeses and meats.

For happy-hour enthusiasts we recommend heading down Via Flaminia Vecchia where you’ll find ReRe “the leopard” (for exquisite cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and an appetizer buffet) and then Ristorante VOY, where paying for drinks gives you access to the varied and delicious buffet.

For dinner your options are limitless…. The most popular places are the restaurants that line Via Flaminia Vecchia. Again, there’s VOY, which was recently remodled for an enhanced ambience. Then there’s Buchetto, a classic, typical Roman restaurant, as well as Mastino, the restaurant of the Hotel Chateau Rive, an excellent restaurant, especially recommended for those craving fish.

200 meters down, at the intersection of Corso Francia, are four restaurants: the Cassamortaro and the more traditional Natalino e Maurizio, and at the end Rossopomodoro (typical Italian cuisine) and T-Bone Station (steaks and potatoes). Passing by Corso Francia, Via Flaminia continues, with Ristorante Ortica and then, farther up on the right, with it’s warm atmosphere, the restaurant Fleming.

On the first right off of Via Flaminia Vecchia, immediately after the restaurant Voy, begins Via Riano with its casual locales and fast food like Crazy Bull, popular amoung the youths, which offers enormous hotdogs, great hamburgers, and Tex-Mex. On the top floor of the Centro Commerciale Ponte Milvio (the Ponte Milvio Shopping Center) is the brand-new Speedy Fish, offering a variety of fish dishes, including take-out and meals to cook at home. Continuing down Via Riano and then turning right on Viale Tor di Quinto, you’ll find two traditional Roman restaurants: Richetto Grappolo d’Oro and Ristorante Ponte Milvio, with outdoor seating.

For who loves a traditional setting and authentic Roman cuisine, we recommend three restaurants in particular: l’Hostaria Pallotta on Piazzale Ponte Milvio, as well as Gnegno and Quinto Quarto, which are very nearby.

For Japanese food there is Ristorante Enso in Piazzale Ponte Milvio and take-out at Daruma Sushi on Via Flaminia Vecchia. At Piazzale Ponte Milvio, there’s also the steak house Gli Specialisti.

So which is the best restaurant? We can’t say for sure, but… at 495 Via Flaminia Vecchia there’s Casa Tua, which is perfect for every important occasion. Also, for an intimate atmosphere and carefully-planned menu, close to the bustle of Ponte Milvio, there is Dinner, at 13 Via Antonino di Giorgio.

If you’re looking for a fixed-price meal, we recommend the romantic Ristorante Sottarponte, which has typical Roman dishes, or the restaurant RioNord which features Brazilian cuisine (like meat directly off the grill), with some Italian twists.

The place at which to end your night is Jarro il quattordicesimo. The place itself is small but there’s room for plenty on the large patio outside the front door; or for wine lovers, just head a few meters down to Cantina XXIX, or head down to 100 Via della Farnesina, and check out their wine cellar. For a quieter locale, offering quick bites and typical regional products, there’s Amoroma, on the opposite side of Piazzale Ponte Milvio.

For Sunday brunch, there’s Dulcamara or the newly opened Ristorante Arancio, both on Via Flaminia Vecchia, with outdoor tables and umbrellas. For private parties and events, there are MET, Vigna dei Cardinali, CasaTua andHappening di Roma. For book readings, there’s plenty of space in the bookstore next to Pallotta and the book store on the third floor of Centro Commerciale Ponte Milvio (The Ponte Milvio Shopping Center).

Sottarponte Ristorante - A unique Roman locale: a classic Roman restaurant on a barge on the Tiber River, anchored by the bridge Ponte Duca d'Aosta (where they moor the boats that go to Isola Tiburtina- an island in the river). It’s perfect for a Sunday lunch, or for a romantic evening during Rome’s long summer period. The boat, which was remodled into a restaurant, has seating on the deck as well as a large indoor dining room with many windows. The menu is typically Roman, at a fixed price (excluding drinks). Rossopomodoro Ristorante - At the intersection of Via Flaminia Vecchia and Corso Francia, Rosso Pomodoro occupies the ground floor of an ancient building only recently restored. Originated in Naples, with the purpose of offering typical napoletean pizza, it has spread to all of Italy because of it’s good, traditional foods, modest prices, and high quality ingredients and good recipes. T-Bone Station Ristorante - One of the first “modern” restaurants in the Ponte Milvio area, the T-Bone Station is still one of a kind. It also offers take-out, catering and delivery. The T-Bone Station offers a wide variety of meat dishes, like a 300 gram steak (this is the piece of meat that when you finish eating it, all that is left is the T-Bone), or 400 grams of ribs, 250 grams of tender and lean fillet, and the American classic: 200 grams of Sirloin or prime rib. I Meloncini Ristorante A large restaurant on Viale Tor di Quinto, with plenty of parking. Easily reachable by car fro Viale Tor di Quinto, just outside of the chaos of Ponte Milvio.
